132856 Sapper Michael Carter

177th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers

13th June 1916

Born in Wolverhampton in 1881.

His parents were James Carter(born in (1860)  and Mary McDermott(born in 1860),they were married in 1879.

Michael had 5 sisters,Mary Ann(born in 1888),Bridget(1890-1964),Sarah(born in 1896),Elizabeth(born in 1897)

and Ellen(born in 1901).

In the 1901 census,they were recorded as living at 19 Upper Chapel Street Rowley Regis,Staffordshire. Both Michael and

his father were employed as brick works labourers. 

In the 1911 census,the family had moved to 1House 20 Court ,Dudley Port,Tipton,Staffordshire.Michael was employed as a brickyard labourer and his father as a labourer.

He enlisted in Dudley. and was killed in action on 13/06/1916.

14th December 1915

Born in Barnard Castle County Durham in 1876.

His parents were Thomas Chatt(1831-1903) and Margaret Snaith(1838-1892),they were married in 1854.

He had 6 brothers,Edward(1859-1898),Thomas(born in 1861),Joseph(born in 1863),

Whitfield(1865-1937),Robert(1870-1955) and Frederick(1873-1951).

He also had 2 sisters,Annie Snaith(born in 1866) and Margaret(born in 1880).

In the 1881 census the family were recorded as living at Newgate,Barnard Castle County Durham.George's father was a Sergeant in the 1st Durham Militia.

In 1897 George marries Annie Wilson (born in 1875) and they went on to have 3 children,Martha Annie(born in 1895),

Ernest(born in 1909) and Elsie(1910-1911).

In the 1901 census, George's family were recorded as living at 1 Mechanic Street,New Shildon,Durham. George was employed as  a plate-layer for the North Eastern Railways.

In the 1911 census, the family had moved to Hope Street ,Crook, County Durham and George was now working as a coal miner.

He enlisted in London and his disembarkation into France was on 10/06/1915.

He was killed in action on 14/12/1915.

155828 Sapper John Henry Cotterill

177th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers

22nd July 1917

Born in Chesterfield ,Derbyshire in 1880.

His parents were Joseph Cotterill(1843-1884) and Mary Sanderson(1846-1888). They were married in 1867.

John had 3 brothers,Thomas(born in 1874),Samuel(born in 1877) and Joseph(born in 1879).

He also had 3 sisters ,Lucy (born in 1869),Emma(born in 1870) and Elizabeth(born in 1872).

In the 1881 census, the family were living on Boythorpe Lane in Hasland,Derbyshire. Johns father was employed as a coal miner.

In the 1911 census,John is recorded as boarding at 19 Catherine Street,Chesterfield ,Derbyshire.He was now working

as a coal miner.

He enlisted in Chesterfield as Private 20040 in the Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters)Regiment,but was later transferred

to the 177th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers as Sapper 155828.

His disembarkation into France was on 15/07/1915  and he was killed in action on 22/07/1917.
