 44025 Private John Dale Benson

10th Battalion Cheshire Regiment

              7th June 1917

Born at 25 Wentworth Avenue,Wallasey,Liverpool on 04-03-1881.He was baptised on 22-05-1881.

In the 1901 census,he is recorded as living with his father,Henry(born 1856),an engine driver,his mother Emily

(nee Reanney(married 25-06-1878)), along with his

3 brothers,Frederick(born 1883),Robert Henry(born 1891) and Joseph(1892) and 2 sisters Elizabeth(born 1886) and Annie (born 1894) at 38 Rosalind Street, Liverpool.

He married Eva Mary Darlington (1888-1954) on 25-12-1907.

In the 1911 census he is recorded as living with Eva and his

2 month old son Frederick William(born 04-02-1911) at

34 Union Street,Egremont.

He was employed as a labourer in a timber yard.

​He enlisted in Wallasey,Cheshire on 08-12-1915. At his medical,he was recorded as being 5ft 6 inches in height and weighing 127lbs.

It aslo records that he had previously been rejected for having an "enlarged heart" and had been marked as fit for home service only.

His dis-embarkation into France was on 05-10-1916 where he was posted to the 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment,but proceeded to 10th battalion Cheshire Regiment on 13-10-1916.

 John and Eva went on to have 3 more children,Emily(born on 15-12-1913),Robert(born on 14-03-1915) and the daughter he would never meet,Dorothy born 2 days before he was killed in action on 07-06-1917.
