14068 Private Richard Condick

Born in Wellington, Somerset in 1883.

His parents were Henry Condick(1854-1929) and

Elizabeth Hooper(born in 1866). They were married in 1875.

Richard had 6 brothers; Henry James(born in 1880), Alfred(born in 1885),Ernest(1887-27/10/1914),

Albert(1890-1953),Gilbert(1892-04/09/1916) and Percy(1895-1939).

He also had 3 sisters; Clara Jane(born in 1885),

Eleanor(born in 1898) and Elsie(1901-1942).

In the 1891 census the family are recorded as living at

Knowle Cottage, Holocombe Rogus, Devon.  Henry was employed as an engine driver(stationary engine).

In the 1901 census, the family had moved to

42 WestLeigh Hill,Burlescombe Devon. Henry was employed as an engine driver at a limestone quarry.

In 1904 Richard married Ida Trevellyan(1883-1960) and they had 2 sons, Ernest Richard(22/07/1907-1986) and

Henry John(28/09/1908-1983).

In the 1911 census Richards family were recorded as living at Countinghouse, Burlescombe,Near Wellington ,Somerset.

Richard was a driver in a stone quarry.

He enlisted in Exeter and his date of disembarkation into France was on 02/10/1915.

Richard was killed in action on 01/07/1916. 

He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,the 1914-1918 British War and the Allied Victory medals.

Ida remarried in 1919 to Thomas Tooze and they lived at Furlong Cottage, Westleigh,Burlescombe,Wellington.

Richard had 2 brothers that also served in WW1;

Ernest was Private 9639 2nd Battalion,The Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 27/10/1914. 

He is buried in Pont-du Hem Military Cemetery , La Gorgue,Nord ,France. Memorial reference XI. C3 .

Gilbert was Private 33423 8th(Service)Battalion,Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 04/09/1916. 

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 1C.
